My husband has avoided sex for two years, but he still watches porn almost every day

We're expecting a baby. He knows he's hooked, lies when I ask, and when we do have sex he gets no pleasure from it. Nothing I try reaches him.

Hello,

I don’t know how to pull my husband out of his porn habit. He is thirty-one and has watched pornography since he was a teenager. There is no sex between us, and when it does happen, he can’t get any pleasure from it. He doesn’t reach orgasm. He has been avoiding it for more than two years.

He knows he is addicted, but he isn’t looking for help. By some miracle we are expecting a baby, and I’m terrified of the next stage of his addiction, which may come once the baby is born. I will do everything I can to make sure our child is never exposed to him watching pornography. My husband keeps lying to me that he no longer watches it. When I show him the evidence, he admits it, but he downplays the problem, saying that he’s trying and making progress. He knows he watches hardcore pornography, and almost every day.

I went to therapy, but he wasn’t interested in it; he came along out of curiosity, as he admitted himself, so I let it go. Now he quotes the sex therapist, who said he won’t get out of it straight away, so in his view everything is fine. I read him a book about how to get free of pornography. He listened, pretended to be interested, and then carried on as before. I can’t describe how much my husband’s betrayals and lies hurt me. I begged, I moved out of the house, I threatened; nothing worked. I don’t know what else to do, where to look for help, or how to convince him.

A thoughtful conversation.
