Is Edging Bad for You?

Is edging bad? As a technique it is generally safe, but hours-long porn sessions are different. What it means for erections, testosterone and NNN.

Is edging bad for you? As a deliberate technique, edging (stopping stimulation just before orgasm, then starting again) is generally considered safe, and therapists even teach a version of it for premature ejaculation. What deserves a closer look is a different kind of edging: hours-long sessions spent hopping between porn videos without finishing. That pattern is linked with problematic porn use, and it can make sex with a partner harder.

This page covers edging specifically. If your question is about masturbation in general, see is it normal to masturbate every day or how to stop masturbating.

Evidence strength: stronger for edging-style techniques being used safely in treatment for premature ejaculation; developing for edging during long porn sessions being linked with problematic use; early or absent for claims about testosterone, the brain, the prostate or erections. The stories below are lived experience.

Is edging healthy or harmful?

The Sexual Medicine Society of North America calls edging “a safe sexual practice that may have benefits for some individuals and couples,” noting that it can make sex last longer and that men with premature ejaculation may use it to extend sex. SMSNA on edging. The NHS describes the related “stop-go” and “squeeze” techniques, in which you stop before the point of ejaculation and then resume, as methods a therapist may teach to help men unlearn premature ejaculation. NHS on ejaculation problems. If finishing too fast is your concern, premature ejaculation in young men goes further.

A psychosexual therapist writing for Healthy Male, an Australian government-funded men’s health organization, separates two kinds of edging: the deliberate technique, and a less intentional kind that comes from video-hopping during porn, where someone starts, stops to change videos, and repeats. In his clinical view, both can affect sexual performance, particularly when edging becomes the only way someone can reach satisfaction. Healthy Male on edging.

So the useful question is less “is edging bad?” and more “what does my edging look like?”

Long sessions and porn

This is the part research has looked at. In two samples of male porn users (1,356 and 944 men), Ince and colleagues found edging closely linked with tab-jumping between videos and with binge sessions. These patterns were relevant to problematic porn use, with needing more and more porn use over time acting as the central link. Ince and colleagues. It was a cross-sectional study, so it shows patterns that travel together, not that edging causes problems.

Video-hopping is common. In an online survey of 3,419 men aged 18 to 35, 91.4% of those who watched porn said they skipped to the best parts. Jacobs and colleagues. If you recognize sessions that run far longer than you meant, the length may matter more than the edging itself. The extreme version of this, sometimes called gooning, has its own page.

A short self-check:

  1. Do sessions regularly last an hour or more, or run into the night?
  2. Do you switch between many videos or tabs to stay near the edge?
  3. Do you tell yourself it “doesn’t count” because you didn’t finish?
  4. Has it become the main way you can reach orgasm?
  5. Is finishing with a partner harder than finishing alone?

Several yes answers do not diagnose anything. They suggest the session, not the technique, is worth changing.

Is edging bad for erectile function?

No study we found has tested edging and erectile dysfunction directly. Online claims that edging “causes ED” are not based on research.

What there is points in a narrower direction. In the Jacobs survey, how often men masturbated did not appear to be a significant factor in erectile dysfunction, while higher scores for problematic porn use were linked with it. Jacobs and colleagues. The Healthy Male therapist describes, from clinical experience, men whose long edging routine had become the only way they could be satisfied: a partner’s touch felt different, they lost erections, or they had trouble finishing, a form of delayed ejaculation. He also links it with a grip that tightens over time, the pattern called death grip. That is expert observation, not a measured effect.

If erection problems keep happening, see a GP. Many causes have nothing to do with edging.

Does edging affect testosterone or the brain?

There is no good evidence either way. The Healthy Male expert states there is no scientific evidence that edging increases testosterone. We found no study showing it lowers it either. Our page on masturbation myths has the full answer on masturbation and testosterone.

We also found no study of edging and the brain. Claims that it “fries dopamine” come from forums. What dopamine actually does is covered in porn and dopamine.

What happens if you edge and don’t finish?

Some men get an ache or heaviness in the testicles, nicknamed “blue balls”. Healthy Male describes it as harmless and temporary, thought to be caused by blood staying in the area after long arousal without release. It eases with ejaculation, or with distraction, exercise or a shower. Healthy Male also notes there is almost no research on it. Healthy Male on blue balls.

What about the prostate or pelvic floor? We found no study showing edging damages either. If you have pelvic pain, pain when ejaculating, or urinary symptoms that keep coming back, see a GP rather than guessing.

When should I see a doctor?

The NHS advises going to A&E or calling 999 for sudden, severe testicle pain, testicle pain with nausea, vomiting or tummy pain, or pain that has lasted more than an hour or continues at rest. These can be signs of testicular torsion. Ask for an urgent GP appointment for a lump, swelling or a change in shape. NHS on testicle pain. Also see a GP if you have persistent trouble finishing with a partner or getting erections.

Is edging breaking No Nut November?

That depends on the rules you set, because there is no official rulebook. No Nut November has its own page. NoFap’s own FAQ says there is no blanket answer, but warns that edging to porn can reinforce a porn habit even without orgasm, and notes the view that it may make things worse by keeping you in front of porn for longer. NoFap FAQ on edging.

If your goal is to change your porn use, edging to porn for hours is the same habit with a different ending. If your goal is a month without orgasm, decide in advance whether edging is in or out, and write it down.

What people describe

Nico describes the long-session version: “Sometimes I’d be sitting there at five in the morning after a porn marathon, wondering whether it was even worth going to bed.” Read his story.

If you want to change it

Treat the next 30 days as an observation window, not a cure or a recovery timeline.

  1. Note your sessions for a week. Start time, length, with or without porn.
  2. Set a time limit, or leave edging out for the month.
  3. Make porn harder to reach on your phone. Turn on a content blocker or your phone’s built-in limits (step-by-step for iPhone and Android), and charge the phone outside the bedroom.
  4. If you masturbate, keep it short and porn-free. Masturbating without porn explains how.
  5. Compare your notes at the end: sleep, mood, and how sex with a partner feels.
